Rembetiko against the machine

In  the early decades of the 20th century, a lot of musicians from  different parts of Greece and the East, flednfrom their homes and met in  Athens to give birth to rembetiko, the music of the underground, and  some of the very first recordings came from refugees in America. In  the late 30s, most of rembetiko songs were censored by the dictatoric  state, for the content of the lyrics and the music idiom. Musicians were  chased in the streets by the police, when carrying an instrument. Bouzouki, baglamas and folk guitar were the main instruments in the early recordings.
